Disney & Universal Sue Midjourney

In a landmark case filed on June 11, 2025, Disney and NBCUniversal have initiated the first major Hollywood lawsuit over AI-generated imagery. They accuse Midjourney of copyright infringement, alleging it produces unauthorized and unlicensed depictions of iconic characters like Darth Vader, Elsa, Shrek, and the Minions—prompting urgent questions about IP rights in the AI era.
Key Points:
Extensive Infringement Alleged - The lawsuit, spanning 110 pages, cites examples of AI-generated likenesses of Yoda, Buzz Lightyear, Elsa, Homer Simpson, and more—accusing Midjourney of flooding the internet with unauthorized reproductions
Ignored Remediation Requests - Studios claim that Midjourney ignored demands to filter or remove infringing content, even as competing AI platforms implemented safeguards
Video Generator Under Scrutiny - The studios express particular concern over Midjourney’s upcoming video-generation feature, accusing it of being trained on copyrighted materials and likely to amplify infringement
Conclusion
This lawsuit marks a pivotal moment in the collision between AI innovation and intellectual property rights. As Disney and Universal challenge AI image-generation platforms in court, the outcome could redefine copyright application in generative AI—potentially forcing platforms to adopt licensed datasets, invest in content filters, or face unprecedented legal accountability.
